Australian Baseball Federation Backs “Let’s do it Canberra”

The Australian Baseball Federation (ABF) have announced their support of Baseball ACT’s “Let’s do it Canberra” campaign, endorsing their bid to position Canberra as the sixth franchise in the inaugural Australian Baseball League (ABL).

Australian Baseball Federation CEO, John May, believes that Canberra’s inclusion in the ABL would add great value to the League product; and cement a truly ‘national’ League structure.

“We would love to see Canberra field a team in the inaugural season of the ABL” May said.

Though delighted to support Canberra’s initiative, the ABF remained adamant that there was still plenty of work to do.

“I think it is fantastic to see that Canberra has gone to such great lengths to express their desire for inclusion in the National Competition,” May said. “The support from the Canberra community has been outstanding and I hope that their efforts are rewarded with the desired result.”

“I encourage any sporting fan, not just baseball fans, to support this campaign.”

“I certainly wish Canberra all the best with their bid, and look forward to the possibility of seeing them as part of the League,” May said.

ACT Baseball Association President, Theo Vassalakis, welcomes the ABF’s endorsement of the “Let’s do it Canberra” bid.

“We still have much work to do in order for our bid to be successful” Vassalakis said. “However, our bid being endorsed by the ABF is definitely a step in the right direction.”

Minister Barr urges Canberra to support the “Let’s do it Canberra” bid

img_0915Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Andrew Barr today invited 5,000 Canberrans to join him in making the $20 pledge in support for the ACT’s bid to join the new Australian Baseball League (ABL).

“This is an exciting time for baseball in Australia,” Mr Barr said. “With the ABL beginning next year it’s yet another great opportunity for Canberrans to compete in sport at the national level. This will provide even more choice in sport for Canberrans and further raise the profile of Canberra as a sporting and tourism destination. So let’s do it Canberra!

“The introduction of the ABL provides another pathway to ensure more young Canberra baseballers get the chance to represent our hometown in an elite competition.

“Canberra has produced many elite baseballers, with four locals currently playing in the US professional leagues and three ACT Academy of Sport scholarship holders recently selected to represent Australia at international competitions. “img_0917

Mr Barr said the ACT Government will consider its contribution to the bid once the level of community support becomes clear.

“The Government may be able to play a role by making some improvements to the seating and lighting at Narrabundah, to bring this already great ground up to ABL standards,” Mr Barr said.

“I’m sure the ACT Government will be in a position to actively consider our support provided the bid can get the support of 5,000 people from Canberra and our region and provided local businesses also show their support as sponsors.”
